With the current proposal we aim at (1) identifying and mapping the sex determination system of the pennate diatom Seminavis robusta using bulked segregant analysis in combination with AFLP (2) functionally characterize using RT-PCR and genetic transformation and (3) study the evolution of selected MT locus genes in closely related species complexes displaying variation in sexual patterns and mating strategies.
