The three commentaries on the Spring and Autumn Annals embody the understanding of Confucian scholars about war from the Spring and Autumn period to the early Han Dynasty. The main view is that a just war has requirements for the initiator of the war, the will of the people, and whether or not it is in accordance with ‘tiandao’ (the way of heaven).
