Project description

In this project, we investigate the impact of the hunger crisis in Flanders in the 1840s at various levels: within the Flemish villages, on a national scale and in a global perspective. The potato crisis that was the trigger of this famine had global roots, but it also disrupted society on a local and national scale. This study is based on in-depth research in local archives and places itself in the international debate on the causes and impact of famines. The results will be published in a book for a wide audience in Dutch and English.
