Project description

The International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) is an international comparative study of student achievement in information literacy and digital skills. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) coordinates the study.

ICILS is administered in the second year of secondary education. A representative sample of students are given a test that tests computer and information literacy skills, including inquiry, creation, participation and communication skills. In addition, questionnaires for students, teachers, principals and ICT coordinators probe the context in which computer and information literacy skills are developed among students. Based on explanatory analyses, including on student characteristics and the home and school context, the study provides a picture of how well students are prepared for studying, working and living in a digital world.

UGent conducts qualitative research on effective practices regarding information literacy and digital skills in secondary education.
