Project description

The project "Voices of the past" (= working title) is a supplement to the existing project for a multimedia website for dialectology and Variational in Flanders. As part of the ongoing project were already about 500 dialect recordings were recorded by the then 'Seminar for Dutch and Flemish Linguistics Dialectology "in the 60s and 70s, digitized and combined on a website. In total, the collection of tapes containing about 750 tires dialect conversations recorded throughout Flanders and French- and Dutch Flanders. The places for which a recording is available are clearly arranged on a map of the area dialect. All metadata for the recordings (data from the informant, technical details of the shooting, any information on the subject and the quality of the call), which were listed on paper sheets by the recording leaders were brought together in a digital database. This additional project aims to also digitize the 250 yet digitized tapes and make them available online also. In addition, some 150 recordings are listened to and a summary will be made of what is heard on the tape. In this way, the content of the tapes is more accessible and can be searched are directed to record on certain issues, eg. The First World War, certain professions, traditional farming vocabulary etc.
