In the spring of 2025, a special exhibition will open at Hofwijck, the country estate of Constantijn Huygens in Voorburg (Netherlands), focusing on the garden in 17th-century Dutch literature. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on ideas about the garden and landscape in the 17th century and today. The most famous Dutch garden poem serves as the starting point for the exhibition: Vitaulium Hofwijck (1653) by Constantijn Huygens. The garden surrounding the museum, damaged by 20th-century infrastructure but recently restored, provides the perfect setting for the exhibition. In his poem, Huygens describes his quest for a life in the garden to escape the hustle and bustle of his work in the city (The Hague). He not only paints a unique picture of rich garden life in the 17th century, but his work also offers a guide for reflecting on our activities in the garden today.
