Project description

This project investigates biosecurity in animal transport as a key factor in preventing the indirect transmission of infectious diseases. A systematic review will analyse current literature on disease spread via transport and the effectiveness of biosecurity measures. Based on this, a questionnaire will be developed to quantify biosecurity levels among animal transporters. In addition, a field study at Belgian poultry and pig slaughterhouses will evaluate current cleaning and disinfection procedures and their effectiveness. The results will help identify weaknesses in current biosecurity practices and support the development of improved disease prevention strategies in the livestock sector.
