Anaerobe ammoniumoxidatie (ANAMMOX) speelt een cruciale rol in de globale microbiële stikstofcyclus. We slaagden erin een nieuwe soort van anammox bacteriën te cultiveren die onder thermofiele condities groeit. In dit project gaan we dieper in op het metabolisme, alsook de mogelijkheden van thermofiele anammox-bacteriën en hun potentieel in de behandeling van warm stikstofhoudend afvalwater.

Project description
Anaerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (anammox) plays a crucial role in the global microbial nitrogen cycle. We have been able to cultivate a new species of anammox bacteria that grows under thermophilic conditions. In this project we aim at understanding its metabolism, the capabilities of thermophilic anammox bacteria and their potential for warm nitrogenous wastewater treatment.
