The city of Antwerp aims to improve access to dental care for vulnerable children and youth up to 18 years old. Ghent University receives funding for the appointment of a half-time dental hygienist, who will outreach to socially vulnerable families in a proactive manner, providing guidance in their preventive oral care and facilitating access to regular dental services. The operational area for this project is exclusively within ELZ-Antwerp South. Ghent University coordinates the project, establishes a network within the coverage area of ELZ-Antwerp South, organizes screenings, collaborates with external dental practices to provide dental care, trains professionals and/or volunteers in the community as dental care coaches, and explores and prepares for further expansion into other primary care zones in the city of Antwerp.
