The European Union (EU) is classically described as a project of peace and prosperity. These ideas are also dominant in the (sub)discipline of EU studies. However, recent research suggests the colonial dimension of the European project. This not only concerns the origins of the EEC, but also neocolonialism in the further evolution of European integration, and forms of coloniality in the current EU (e.g. racism, migration, trade, development policy, green colonialism, etc.). This project attempts to contribute to this literature by shedding a different light on the history, evolution, and current functioning of the EU from critical, post/decolonial theories. This will not only contribute to a correction of the historiography of the European project but also to a more critical insight into current EU policy and the way in which it is typically studied and taught at universities.
