Project description
This project studies gender relations and monsters in Oromo oral narratives. On the one hand, it identifies the gender-stereotypical discourse at play in these narratives. On the other hand, I analyze how monster narratives provide an opportunity to critique hierarchical structures and discriminatory practices. The research is a unique way of interpreting oral literature in the Oromo language as a way to study how masculinity and femininity, human and non-human are related to both normative and alternative discourses.
