Project description

Plastics are one of the cornerstones of our society, especially in packaging applications. This results in a lot of waste that is generated and (preferably) needs to be recycled. The European Commission introduced directives to use 10 million tons of recycled plastics in new products by 2025 and, in particular, to recycle 55% of plastic packaging waste by 2030. New technologies will be necessary to increase recycled volumes, while at the same time warranting the quality of the final output of the recycling process. To make this transition, a thorough understanding of both the technologies as well as the associated costs of each step in the recycling process are a prerequisite to create a sustainable (business) model. Such understanding is not offered by the current literature. By examining the cost of each (technological) step, this project will allow to make cost-quality trade-offs and, as such, reveal the most effective processing options. Apart from a cost and quality dimension, this project will also add an environmental dimension to the decision-making process by accounting for CO2 emissions.
