Project description

Amino sugars are intermediates of the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway (HBP) and derivatives thereof. These molecules have attracted ample interest by industry as their application markets are situated in multiple sectors such as agriculture, cosmetics, pharma, food and nutraceuticals. To this day, the developed biotechnology-based production routes for amino sugars are promising but remain suboptimal in terms of titre, purity and cost. In addition, extraction from natural resources typically requires multiple steps making this production route very costly and inefficient. In this project improved microbial biosynthesis of amino sugars, with focus on hyaluronan, is explored and the optimal route for valorisation is identified.
