This project investigates the in situ microbial communities associated with shipwrecks and munition sites to identify and optimize biodegradation strategies for TNT. By exploring the intricate multi-step process of TNT degradation, the interplay among different microbial groups, and the underlying mechanisms, targeted bioremediation approaches can be explored for treating contaminated marine environments, such as those in the North Sea.
