epilepsy is chronic neurological disorder, characterized by spontaneous seizures. A promising, but currently experimental neurostimulation technique to treat refractory epilepsy is deep brain stimulation (DBS). As farmacokinetics and – dynamics needs to be understood for classic anti-epileptic drugs, we need to understand the variables of DBS better to obtain a stimulation protocol that can be applied in a human setting. In this project, we use experimental animals to elucidate the anti-epileptogenic/neuromodulatory properties of hippocampal DBS. And currently used stimulation parameters are optimized to obtain an efficient stimulation paradigm, of which we will also test the possible side effects.
