Spurred by the so-called “fourth industrial revolution” and the abilities big data, AI and automation generate, the field of healthcare is rapidly changing. New possibilities, however, also generate new challenges, for example in the fields of genetics and reproductive medicine. Therefore it is important that medical ethics as a field stays on top of developments in multi-omics, machine learning and genetic engineering so that ethical considerations can be incorporated in the roll-out of new medical technologies, rather than being an after-thought. This project will build further on a tradition of collaborative interdisciplinary research across faculties and will keep a finger on the pulse, enabling a rapid response when new ethical challenges present themselves in the wake of new innovations. The research will be embedded in both the interfaculty METAMEDICA platform and the Bioethics Institute Ghent.
