Horses are top atletes with an impressive cardiovascular system. However, cardiac diseases, such as valvular regurgitations, arrhythmias or malformations are relatively common in horses and may result in reduced performance or even in a risk for horse and rider. Diagnosis of cardiac disease is made by a combination of electrocardiography (for rhythm disorders), echocardiography (for structural or functional disorders) and biomarkers (analysis of blood samples). Compared to human and small animal cardiology, equine cardiology is hampered by the size of the animal and the specific physiology. The goal of this project is to develop advanced diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies within the field of equine arrhythmias, cardiac morphology and function, biomarkers, and vascular research. The horse might also be used as model for human cardiovascular disease. The Equine Cardioteam Ghent is worldwide probably the most well-known equine cardiac research group, able to achieve this goal.
