- Geography of mobility and transportation
The project aims to support, evaluate, and further develop Flemish walking and cycling policy. The research conducted will result in publications and accessible reports and manuals, with broad communication and participation in public debate being central. The research will primarily focus on cycling-related research, exploring multidisciplinary themes such as health and promoting autonomous mobility for children, but will draw a link to walking as well (so all active travel modes)
Initially, a multidisciplinary literature review will be conducted to identify research opportunities within this theme. Following this, an analysis will be carried out on how the current cycling policy in Flanders has been developed. The study will investigate the actors and mechanisms that shape this cycling policy, as well as those responsible for its implementation. Special attention in this process will be given to the level of representativeness of the needs of vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Additionally, a comparison with Dutch cycling/walking policy will be made in this context. The insights gained will be used to provide recommendations for the Flemish government and to lay the foundation for further qualitative research. The project will explore ways to enhance public support for cycling- and walking-friendly measures, as well as the systems and actors involved in promoting sustainable travel behavioral change.
