Project description

Amongst subsistence farmers in the poorest areas of the world, a particular challenge is food agency i.e. ensuring that households have control over their production and food choices and are able to consume the food they want. Ongoing research in Burundi shows that many households we interviewed eat food that they would rather not eat. We propose to extend the reach of current research to other areas we work on to make spatial and longitudinal assessments. A second research focus is looking for potential areas of intervention in the areas of market participation and technology adoption. Subsistence farmers are often in a disadvantageous trading position as they receive low prices for the products they sell and for their labour, equally facing low levels of agency to make choices. Farming technology can help to either improve product choice, increase production efficiency and strengthen the resilience of farms to climatic changes for which we want to study the farmers' agency.
