Project description

The purpose of this research project is to explore the potential of freeze-drying performed in a continuous way as final step in the production process of pharmaceuticals based on mRNA lipid nanoparticles, in order to extend their shelf life, to cut the costs and complications related to the cold chain supply and to guarantee the desired quality attributes in the final product. It is aimed to provide a concrete approach that will speed up the development of a correct formulation and lyophilisation process for new types of LNPs, taking the LNP properties into account. There are currently no guidelines to help in the design of freeze-drying of such nanoparticles. The results reported for single types of LNPs are not applicable for other types, thus making the study of each lipid nanoparticle a stand-alone case. The use of innovative continuous spin freeze-drying technology will be the main freeze-drying approach selected for this research.
