Project description
Constructed wetlands are nature-based solutions for water treatment and reuse that mimic the chemical, physical and biological conversion processes found in natural wetlands. The research focuses on optimizing design and operational parameters to achieve optimal pollutant removal. The focus is on micropollutants (microplastics, pesticides, ...) on the one hand, and on the other hand on "intensifying" helophyte filters by introducing aeration and/or using innovative filling materials. Innovation is based on measurements in both lab, pilot and full scale helophyte filters, in combination with theoretical, mechanistic models. The ultimate goal is to develop sustainable, cost-effective water management solutions.
