Bio
Bruno Lapauw is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine (UGent) and Head of Clinic at the department of Endocrinology at Ghent University Hospital, Belgium. He and his group’s primary research interest is unravelling the determinants and consequences of sex steroid hormone exposure. Specific areas of focus are how to best measure hormone bioavailability and to explore the relevance thereof in bone and substrate metabolism. To this end, we participated in several international projects and established extensively phenotyped clinical research cohorts (SIBLOS/SIBEX in healthy men; Merelbeke in community-dwelling aging men; NINIOS in pubertal boys; SMELLS to investigate steroid hormone metabolism after bariatric surgery; and ENIGI multi-national study in transgender people). In the recently started multicentre BEED-ED project, the aim is to implement better estimates of hormonal exposure to improve diagnosis and treatment in endocrine diseases in clinical practice. Bruno Lapauw is recipient of multiple grants and fellowships, promotor of 6 PhD theses, and currently supervises 5 other PhD students. He is co-author of 117 A1 publications and has an h-index of 27 (Web of Science, 10/10/2022). He is an active member of multiple professional societies, such as the Diabetes Liga (medical advisor of the local group), Belgian Endocrine Society, European Society for Endocrinology (member of Focus Area Calcium & Bone and PARAT Working Group), European Calcified Tissue Society, Belgian Bone Club (board member), and the Belgian Thyroid Club (board member).
