Description
Structural collaboration between members of the UGent-VUB Alliance End-of-Life Care Research Group and various persons and clinical services within UGent and UZ Gent, on the theme of palliative care and end of life.
The interdisciplinary and interprofessional End-of-Life Care Research Group initiates projects, conducts research and disseminates research on palliative care and end-of-life care for people with a serious condition, both adults and children, both nationally and internationally. The research can be described as public health research, health services research and clinical intervention research. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life and quality of death of people with severe conditions and their families, regardless of the condition, the age of the patient or the care setting.
To this end, close and fruitful collaborations have been developed in recent years with various services within UZ Gent. The intention with this SVO is to formalize, consolidate and further develop this cooperation in the future. With this partnership we will make a better connection between the researchers of Ghent University and UZ Ghent. Within this context, researchers within the hospital services who (want to) work on palliative care or end-of-life research can be better engaged and integrated. To date, there has been insufficient coordination and streamlining, and the knowledge and skills of the various actors remain underused.
This structural embedding of collaboration in research within Ghent University and with UZ Ghent partners will be important for the proper implementation of projects, for the dissemination and valorization of crucial innovations in palliative and end-of-life care, patient-oriented care and high-quality care. The institute will collaborate intensively with a broad group of stakeholders and build a strong implementation focus to transfer research insights to education, policy and clinical practice. This will be all the more possible within the recently established Expertisecentrum Palliatieve Zorg Gent. Within this Center of Expertise – founded by the same protagonists of this SVO – research, education, care and social services in palliative and end-of-life care are structurally connected through mutual knowledge exchange. In this way, care, research and education are strengthened and improved.
