Description

LOKSTAT is an interdisciplinary database of local and regional statistics from the period 1800-1970.

The database includes the results of the official censuses on population, agriculture, trade, and industry that took place in Belgium. In addition to the results of the national and periodic censuses, the collections consist of serial and one-time data series. The content primarily pertains to the following societal domains and themes:

Economy Cross-sectoral (statistics related to the workforce and socio-economic typology of municipalities); agriculture (personnel, livestock, acreage, crops, farm structure, productivity, wages, land prices); industry (personnel, companies, power sources), trade (personnel, companies), commuting, and taxation (direct tax revenues)
Demography-Social Population development, population characteristics (gender, age, marital status, residence, origin, nationality, family structures), poor relief, natural and migratory population movements
Culture Education (literacy, schooling), religious affiliation, language
Political-Institutional Territorial division, administrative organization, elections (composition of the electorate, results of municipal elections)
Spatial-Topographical Land use, buildings, transport infrastructure (waterways, train railways, tram railways)

Alongside the available datasets, a Geographic Information System was developed to spatially present and analyze data based on historical boundaries. Using this application, the Quetelet Center can create custom maps upon request. A web version was developed in collaboration with the CARTOGIS research group at Ghent University and is available to the public along with a selection of historical statistics via the web portal Census 1900: www.Lokstat.UGent.be.
