Biosecurity

Description

When discussing biosecurity, we often limit our focus to safeguarding animals from disease introductions and spread. But biosecurity can serve much more purposes. Good biosecurity can largely contribute to sustainable livestock production. In the coming years, an increase in the demand for animal-based products is expected due to a further expanding human population. Yet this may have a negative impact on the climate through greenhouse gas emissions. The climate change in turn may negatively impact animal health through the increased incidence of vector borne diseases.

All measures that improve animal health and productivity, lead to less emission and more sustainable production and have a direct effect on livestock farms as animals will be more resilient towards diseases leading to improved food security and economics as well as improved human health. Investing in biosecurity leading to healthier animals and creating resilient farms will protect both animal and human health.

Biocheck.UGent

Biocheck.UGent is a risk-based scoring system for evaluating the quality of biosafety at your company (Laanen et al., 2010; Gelaude et al., 2014; Ghent University, 2015). The system does not start from a specific disease but rather approaches biosafety in general and focuses on those aspects that are common to the spread of many different types of infectious diseases. The questionnaires are divided into different subcategories for internal and external biosafety.
