Technological (r)evolutions in the generation of molecular DNA and RNA sequence data allow a large number of biological and/or medical problems to be approached in a quantitative, data-driven way. The avalanche of molecular data is a driving force for innovation in sectors such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical sciences. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that combines biology, computer science, mathematics and statistics with a view to analysing and interpreting biological (sequence) data.
PSB UGentVIB
Bioinformatics and computational biology are cornerstones of modern-day molecular biology and are strongholds of the center. PSB has a longstanding expertise in many subdomains of bioinformatics, including the assembly and annotation of novel plant genome sequences, evolutionary genomics, the analysis and integration of -omics data, gene network modeling and comparative genomics.
