Sex development

Description

In DSD, the body has chosen an unusual path to develop into a boy or girl.

Sometimes the sex characteristics at birth are different from what you would expect based on the chromosomes, or the sex of the baby is not immediately clear. Sometimes the condition only becomes apparent later: due to the absence of puberty, because the first sexual contact is difficult or due to infertility.

There are many variations in sex development. Every situation is unique.

The diagnosis of DSD and the treatment policy are very complex. According to international guidelines, care for such conditions should be provided in a multidisciplinary centre with special expertise in sex assignment, diagnostics, surgery and psychological counselling. A centre that monitors a large number of people with different variations.

At UZ Gent, you can count on this multidisciplinary expertise. The Centre for Gender Development is unique in Belgium and enjoys international renown. With the Centre for Gender Development, we also want to stimulate scientific research, improve the flow of information to care providers and patients, and promote social emancipation and respect for the target group. To this end, we work together with various patient organisations. We also organise parents' evenings and family days to promote contact between fellow sufferers.
