Medicine: HIV

Description

Since 1983, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has infected more than 78 million people, approximately half of whom have died as a result of the infection. Fortunately, there are now a number of antiretroviral drugs on the market that greatly improve the quality of life and life expectancy of infected individuals. Unfortunately, this therapy does not succeed in removing the residual virus from the body, which means that patients are obliged to remain on therapy for life if they want to prevent the virus from returning. That is why the HIV Cure Research Centre, led by Professor Linos Vandekerckhove, is eagerly searching for a way to completely cure people living with HIV.

The HIV Reference Centre at UZ Gent provides holistic care to people with HIV and AIDS. This means that we not only offer medical assistance, but also take the emotional and social problems of patients to heart. Patients can also come to our centre with questions about PrEP (HIV inhibitors), for medical follow-up of PrEP treatment and for HIV or STI testing.
